Toronto music presenters unite to form Polyphonic Ground

Polyphonic GroundThere's a new initiative to help connect the oodles of culturally diverse music we have here in Toronto with audiences who are "culturally curious" and looking for these kinds of discoveries right here in our city. Uma Nota is proud to be a part of Polyphonic Ground, a freshly formed collaboration between 12 local music presenters who, like us, are "committed to building and sustaining Toronto as a global music city."Here are a few of the key points, as mentioned in the recent press release, and a little bit about how and why we're opting into this initiative.The missionPolyphonic Ground strives to "provide points of connection for artists and audiences, strengthen industry practices and be a united voice to government, business and industry. " This means strength in numbers. It means we'll shout out one another's events from time to time, work together on issues like access to cultural sector resources and grant opportunities, improving conditions around putting on special events like music and arts festivals in Toronto and other key matters that affect all of us as small- to medium-sized presenters.In a recent article in NOW Magazine, our colleague Kayla McGee, who is the managing director of Small World Music and the community lead for Polyphonic Ground, notes that we in Toronto lack any real "infrastructure for live music presenters" and, until now, there haven't been "shared platforms to allow us to work and grow together."

"We want to present live music that draws in the culturally curious," says McGee. "With the double-bill series, we encourage audience curiosity, discovery and an exploration of the amazing array of musical talents available to Toronto audiences. Audiences can experience African and Persian music together in one night, or Latin vibes and Indigenous drums, or Bollywood and Klezmer. The possibilities are endless."

The partnersOur partners in this new collaboration include many familiar local presenters. Some are organizations with whom we've already co-produced shows and events, and others with whom we're looking forward to a closer working relationship.The initial 12 member organizations involved in Polyphonic Ground are: Ashkenaz Foundation, Batuki Music Society, Good Kind Productions, iNative, Link Music Lab, Lula Music & Arts Centre, MonstrARTity Creative Community, Music Africa, Revolutions Per Minute, Small World Music Society and World Fiddle Day Toronto, along with Uma Nota Culture (our official production company name -- yes, it's also our social media handle).The music seriesWe've long been champions of musical discoveries, especially at our events where someone might come to check out their friend drumming away in a Brazilian percussion troupe, and take in a great Afrobeat band or a local DJ who spins rare dub. In that same spirit of discovery, the first Polyphonic Ground concert series kicks off this fall. In this series, two of the partner organizations will be paired up to co-produce a double-bill that aims to introduce audiences to new music from right here in Toronto. These monthly concerts, designed to foster widespread musical discovery in the city, begin on September 14 with Ashkenaz Foundation and Small World Music Society, followed by Batuki Music and Uma Nota presenting on October 12, Link Music Lab and Good Kind Productions present November 9, and Lula Music & Arts and Music Africa co-presenting December 14. These events will take place at Revival Bar, 783 College St., on the second Thursday of the month starting in September. Artists will be announced soon. The growth opportunitiesThis isn't only a new concert series. The initiative also has the goal of increasing "access to training and leadership and bolstering professional development opportunities within the music industry." Uma Nota Culture seeks a resident artist who can contribute to the collective’s productions in a number of ways. The position is for 40 hours weekly and includes weekends and evenings. Work hours are irregular and there is a need to be flexible with other commitments. Salary is 34,500.00. per annum pro rated to length of contract.About Uma Nota Culture: Uma Nota began as a music night at Toronto’s Gladstone Hotel in 2007 and remains a recurring event in the city. Uma Nota is a showcase performance series with an ever-changing lineup of performers including live musical acts and DJs as well as a number of other forms of art, performance and cultural manifestations, highlighting music and culture of a tropical, polyrhythmic and Afro-diasporic nature. Along with the ongoing music events, Uma Nota partners with a number of cultural organizations around the city working on a range of activities, from cultural events supporting film, dance and food programs as well as educational workshops for adults, young people, families and children. Uma Nota is an unincorporated non-profit collective based in Toronto.Skills and Qualifications: – Singer and bandleader: Must be able to sing lead vocals in Brazilian Portuguese (northeastern Brazilian accent preferred) in a variety of contemporary and folk music styles including but not limited to samba, maracatu and forró. Ideally the candidate would also be an experienced and decisive bandleader who can successfully direct large and small musical ensembles. Applicants who are successful in attracting our attention may be sent a partial or full list of songs for vocal evaluation as part of the application process. Minimum requirement: Two to four (2 to 4) years singing in professional or semi-professional ensembles. – Multi-instrumentalist: Strong preference for vocalists who can play both acoustic or electric-acoustic guitar, and/or Brazilian percussion instruments (including pandeiro) while singing lead or backup vocals at the same time. Rhythm and Brazilian “swing” or musical feel is essential to this position, in this and other aspects.Minimum requirement: Two to four (2 to 4) years performing as an instrumentalist and/or signer in professional or semi-professional ensembles.DJ/selector: Must be able to DJ using Serrato, vinyl records and/or other electronic forms. You must also have your own laptop computer, preferably with DJ software already installed. We are looking for someone with a minimum of four to five (4 to 5) years of experience performing in and around Toronto, as well as in Ontario and Quebec. Note: Strong preference for familiarity with and contacts within the musical communities surrounding and overlapping with the Uma Nota community, including attendees of events such as: The Om Reunion Project annual Solstice Festival; Promise and Alien InFlux events including Cherry Beach parties and the Harvest Festival; Eclipse Festival; Brazilian community events and others.Designer/visual artist: Minimum five (5) years of experience in graphic design, layout and production for print and online. Strong preference for creativity and experience designing attractive marketing materials for music, arts and cultural events in the Toronto area. We originally were going to call this event 'Inside the Block, Party' because the location is wholly new and literally in the middle of an industrial block, wedged between two streets. Also, like the Block Party, it is totally set up by us, from sound, to decor design, to bar and food ... start to finish. This one will be the tropical jam inside a cold-ish winter nite.

Lots of talent and creativity in the mix to move your body and stimulate the pleasure zones of the mind.The Human RightsUma Nota alumni The Human Rights (formally Friendlyness & The Human Rights) have spent 6 years honing their unique style of uplifting and ultra-heavy reggae music. The ten-piece band has recruited Toronto soul man Tréson and have re-united as The Human Rights. Tréson brings a whole new level and dynamic to the band, his powerful voice the perfect compliment to Friendlyness' style. After two Canadian tours, CBC recording sessions, opening slots for reggae legends Gregory Isaacs, John Holt and Beres Hammond, and a feature in the new Trailer Park Boys movie, The Human Rights are gearing up to release their 2nd LP and are touring in support of their latest single "Old School Track." Heavy Soundz (Montreal)

Heavy Soundz come to us from Montreal and embody the alter-Latino scene there. Solidly anchored in a merry multicultural melange, the members of Montreal collective Heavy Soundz kick it with crazy rhythms that get any party started. What do these 5 musicians and 5 MCs from Québec, Haïti and Latin America have in store for us? A caliente whirlwind of Latin urban music spiced with reggae, cumbia and hip hop, as heard on their latest album, “Tumba Parlantes”, a sound that gets everyone in the room moving, grooving and sweating … We are pleased to welcome Heavy Soundz to the El Mocambo  On Oct 17th. (FB event)Flavia Nascimento and BandFlavia won hearts and fans in Toronto with her whimsically romantic forró during last year’s Uma Nota Festival. She is now proud to launch her self titled EP in Toronto. Recorded in Brazil over the winter (Brazil summer) of 2014, the CD is a mixture of original compositions and original takes of some classics from her homeland. The distinct regional style of her native state Minas Gerais is heard as some songs harken the congados (African processions from Minas) and a distinct, almost Milton Nascimento vibe in her arrangements. Her live performance is warm and festive, with a touch of romance. Flavia is the most enchanting start to our festivals. Flavia plays the festival launch at Touché Lounge on Oct 16th at 9pm. Wagner Petrilli  

Brazilian guitarist and composer Wagner Petrilli, originally from São Paulo, is one of Toronto’s most prominent Brazilian musicians. Wagner plays the very best MPB or musica popular brasileira, which is a very Brazilian way of saying the work is made with influences from the entire spectrum of Brazilian national music, including samba, choro, afro-derived forms and classical music. His recently released CD Confissão (“confession”) received critical acclaim and his cd launch at Lula Lounge was a memorable evening for all there. Expect a lively and powerful show from a great band. Wagner plays at 6pm at The Great Hall. (FB event)

Batucada Carioca (led by Maninho Costa)

Batucada Carioca is Toronto’s premiere Rio-style samba troupe. Led by Rio native sambista Maninho Costa (Maninho z10) Batucada has a raw uplifting style. For their 10th anniversary Maninho has prepared a special set of all new material, and beyond the regular bateria (samba drums) the show features Carlinhos Pernambuco on cavaco, Wagner Petrilli on 7-string guitar and Christopher Butcher on trombone, with special guests performances by Tio Chorinho and Louis Simao. Batucada Carioca plays at 7:30 at the Great Hall on Oct 19th. Roda de Samba (Brazilian roots samba) 3pm

A ‘roda de samba’ or circle of samba, is a a gathering of friends who play and sing classic samba tunes with smaller instrumentation (as opposed to the baterias of big samba schools). In Brazil a roda de samba can take place on market days or at bars with people gathering around a table of seated musicians, and eating, dancing, rejoicing and often singing along in chorus. In Toronto, Carlos Pernambuco is at the forefront of this movement, with his infectious voice and cavaquinho leading the songs. The roda (circle) will happen in the afternoon while the feijoada is being served and other activities happen around the venue. Uproot Andy's global bass domination gets Noisey (and comes to T.O.)

image from mixpackFresh off a Mexican tour, where he did up a nearly one-hour mix special for Noisey Mexico (that country's arm of the VICE music property), Uproot Andy  continues the worldwide global bass takeover was on last time he came to town (with partner in crime Geko Jones from Brooklyn's Que Bajo!? at our festival's Bridges Tropical Mashup night).Here's a bit from the preamble of his interview with Noisey Mexico (the article title, loosely translated: "97% of the time [this music is] a celebration of identity").

La primera vez que Uproot Andy vino al Distrito Federal fue para tocar en un Day Off y nos dimos cuenta de que además de ser un DJ con mucho incansable, es también un productor ingenioso, nada tímido y está completamente determinado a llevar la palabra del Global Bass a todos los rincones del mundo [Paulina, the writer, recalls] the first time he came to Mexico City to play [an event called] Day Off, her crew commented that beyond Andy's tirelessness as a party DJ,  he is an ingenious producer, by no means shy attitude and completely determined to make global bass known in each and every corner of the world.

The writer here also urges readers, before she interviews the man, not to miss his appearance at that city's "Tropical Storm" festival, recommending they download the mix and try it for any dancing style or on a bike ride.By the time our global bass ambassador comes back to town, even the winter-shy among us can bicycle over to the party. As the bass operative on a mission to spread the music worldwide from Brooklyn lofts to festivals in Mexico, Colombia and beyond, Andy gets full props on the global citizen tip. He speaks fluent Spanish and his best tingz in the world proudly speak to other world citizens (Montreal bagels make the list, as does Barranquilla's Carnaval).Global as he is, Uproot Andy is even a hometown Toronto son, though he only makes so many visits. Next up is May 10 at Uma Nota! We can't resist the opportunity to bring Uproot Andy for a spring dancefloor "worldwide" kinda thing 'cause it works so nice. Plus, we wanted to give him more time rocking it for you all after last year's appearance at the Great Hall. For the playback style party, bringing the old school Uma Nota vibe, we've got Uproot Andy -- special delivery from Brooklyn -- alongside Maracatu Mar Aberto playing one of their first stage shows of the year, including some new songs and percussive touches. Quique Escamilla's 500 Years of Night

qiqueWhat is it about this guy Quique Escamilla? Quirky? lovable? romantic? Yeah, he's got sweet tunes that can bring you the full moon by the water. He is also bad ass, and the music is coupled with themes of resistance and consciousness. His new record, 500 Years of Night, smacks us in the face with truths about the Americas and their "discovery" by the conquistadores from imperial Europe.His musical style, brought to you via his Chiapas homeland, the Estados Unidos de Mexico, and his Toronto home, with the whole modern world as influence, is those 500 years of history. By fusing traditional Mexican musical styles such as ranchera and huapango with other Latin American rhythms, as well as rock and reggae, Quique creates his own unique 'Music of the Americas'. These poly-rhythmic designs serve as a vehicle for Quique's incisive and passionate lyrics that touch on issues like indigenous rights and sustainability while tackling every form of oppression.In Toronto, where so called 'world' musicians (I hate that term) are for the world crowd and 'indie' musicians are for the indie crowd, Quique is the guy that builds and crosses those bridges. Navigating the currents of what is Brazilian popular music (música popular brasileira), we have always stepped beyond what agents send down the line and have used our knowledge as fans of the music and active people in the scenes, from Sampa, Rio, Recife, New York, Montreal and the Tdot. With that,  on Saturday, January 18, 2014, groundbreaking Brazilian artist Pedro Sá Moraes pulls through Round Venue.Pedro Sá Moraes is a new wave of exploration in the music. A schooled musician carrying the heritage of the gluttonous tropicalia artist, consuming influences from across the Brazilian musical spectrum and unafraid to digest it and serve it up anew with digital spices. Think Gilberto Gil with Sonic Youth (his own stated influences).Moraes was named one of the "10 Artists You Should Have Known In 2012" by NPR. Luiz Gonzaga: 100 Years and an Eternal Legacy.

This year is the centenary of Luiz Gonzaga. I’ve been delaying writing this post for some time now. In fact, his birthday was on December 13th and I had wanted to celebrate and write this for that day. Alas, it was not to be. Instead I did what every good forrozeiro should do while in Rio: I went to a forró in the square at Praça Tiradentes and danced with some lovely ladies to live music. It had rained early in the afternoon, so the night was warm and humid; only the die-hards came out to hear the many bands sharing the stage and paying tribute to the great Gonzaga, the King of Baião.How can one convey the immense influence and legacy of Luiz Gonzaga in a simple web post?Well, instead of rehashing what you can easily find on Wikipedia, other websites and in books about Gonzaga, I thought I would give you a quick breakdown and let you use your own research skills to find out more about this man. I’ve curated a bunch of YouTube videos of songs and clips that I thought might help you along the path. Take the time to discover the wonderful story of Luiz Gonzaga.The son of an “8 baixos” accordion (diatonic button accordion) player named Januário, Luiz Gonzaga was born in arid Northwest of Pernambuco state in Brazil. He joined the army, traveled Brazil, and ended up in Rio de Janeiro. Fate took hold and a series of historical currents allowed for this man to become the reference for forró and Northeastern culture across Brazil.At the time Luiz went to Rio, there was an influx of poorer working class migrants from the drought-stricken northern states. Although he tried to get into the Portuguese fado style, marchinhas and other contemporary music of classy Rio, it was the infectious rhythms and melodies of the Northeast that got him noticed. His showmanship made him popular. The themes of his songs, the hardships of migrant life, homesickness, and the rural life, became trendy among all the people.Luiz was a super gifted performer and he created some important creative friendships with composers like Humberto Teixera. Humberto wrote the song Asa Branca, which became and remains the anthem of forró music and of the "simple life" back home; of nostalgia. It was with Humberto, also from the Northeast, in this case Ceara state, that they decided that the base rhythm for their songs would be the "baião."The era also saw radio flourish. The recorded sound was just reaching early adolescence. He signed a contract with RCA and at one point in time it seemed like Luiz was the only artist they were recording. With this, he inspired a generation. He became the de facto reference for forró and his voice was heard all around the nation. People were buying radios, and people flocked around the radio. The popular performer was also a popular marketer, endorsing many products and services from supermarkets to cars.Here is Luiz and band in a film from 1958. Check out the cool steps when they dance the "xaxado." This band was often playing for the Rio elites in the swank clubs and hotels of the day.Below is the trailer of the movie The Man Who Bottled Clouds, which is about the life of Humberto Teixera, but chronicles much of a crucial time in Luiz Gonzaga's career. (There are English subtitles; it makes for a great reference.)But wait! I wouldn’t want to be misinterpreted here. It was not chance that made the King of Baião. Maybe there was an element of chance involved, but the man created a legacy through beautiful music, performance, an acknowledgement of the tradition and cleverness. His songs carry such a beautiful poetic tone, sometimes romantic, sometimes fun, sometimes sad, and often tongue and cheek.This is one of my favorites, in a dubby style and a minor key, it speaks of a journey of hardship yet satisfaction at the place you have reached in life. Epic.One beautiful anecdote I read somewhere is from when Luiz wandered into a record store in Fortaleza, sometime in the early '70s. Luiz was really a thing of the past then, with few people in the industry paying attention to him after the early '60s, when bossa nova and Brazilian rock became more prominent. He maintained his popularity in his beloved Northeast however, and the store owner instantly recognized him. The shopkeeper asked Luiz if he had heard Caetano Veloso’s version of Asa Branca. Luiz responded that he hadn’t. Caetano, at this point living in exile in London, included this song as the last on his record. It was a slow rendition, a strong lament of the saudade, the nostalgia, that he felt for home. Luiz cried from the emotion. The old man not even conscious of his legacy among a generation of tropicalia musicians. Soon after Gilberto Gil proclaimed that Luiz and Humberto Teixeira, the composers of his time, were “responsible for a revolution in my life.”After that, the great Luiz Gonzaga slowly returned the the popular consciousness of the nation. He reunited with his estranged son and began touring once more. Another interesting tidbit, Luiz Gonzaga apparently said (speaking about the dictatorship era), is that music about politics is for the educated university types like Caetano and Gilberto Gil -- he was just a simple man.This is the trailer of a recent movie about the relationship of Luiz Gonzaga with his son and the burden of being the King of Baião and being from a simple rural background.Another great moment of interview of father and son. Please learn Portuguese people, or ask someone special to help you translate. ;)I guess at this point I should let you know about about forró. Here is a quick explanation from a previous article I wrote:Forró is not really the music per se. It is more of an all-inclusive cultural manifestation: music, dance, party. When you dance the rhythms of forró it is usually in a pair. Style can vary between people and region but it is always fun, tongue & cheek, and sometimes safado (an implied sly sexuality). The 3 basic instruments are: the triangle, the zabumba drum and the accordion. The three basic rhythms are: Xote (pronounced 'shótch' and usually slower), Baião (more up-tempo) and the Arrasta Pé (quick two step).Check more videos:A cute animation to a famos Luiz xote about a young girl who seems ill, but really she's just got the love bug of adolescence. Her dad takes her to the doctor, and the doctor says: "There ain't no cure in all of medicine!"Here is a song in the baião rhythm. It is upbeat and happy. Chamego is when you dance close, cheek to cheek often hip to hip and belly to belly, a bit jumpy and totally with no shame and a sly smile on your face: "Ai! Que chamego bom!"This one is an arrasta pé rhythm, more upbeat and you dance side to side. This is also the beat you use in a quadrilha, Brazilian old time square dancing.Here is one of my absolute favorites. In this one, with wicked instrumentation including a flute, Luiz, in a classic forró spoken word style, tells the story of how he returned to his father's house after more than sixteen years living in the Southeast of Brazil. It is told in classic Northeastern dialect and cleverness. Maninho Costa and Batucada Carioca

In Toronto, there are many agitators in the Brazilian music scene. A great figure and a reference in this scene is the leader of Batucada Carioca, Maninho Costa.  It's crazy, because we don’t realize how lucky we are to have a man like Maninho Costa or ManinhoZ10 (pronounced mah-knee-n-yo-zé-des). He is a true link between our world and Brazil. A sambista through and through, he is the real deal  and his feel in the rhythm is unparalleled. Even in Brazil it would be rare to have the opportunity to study and learn from a man like Maninho.Maninho (a term of endearment meaning "little bro") started playing in the baterias of Rio de Janeiro in his early youth. His uncle, Mestre Odilon Costa, is one of the most recognized masters of the big Rio samba schools. Among 100 hand-picked musicians, Maninho was chosen to record the solo repinique parts on the Sergio Mendez record Brasileiro, for the song Fanfarra. He has played and is recognized in all the major samba school baterias. He ended up in Toronto in the early 2000s after being invited to play for the annual Brazilian Ball. And so it goes -- he has been here ever since, punctuated by the yearly trips to the homeland, Rio de Janeiro.A little preview of what will come when Maninho Costa and Batucada Carioca hit at Uma Nota: Here's ManinhoZ10 as a featured guest with Monobloco. Be prepared for a full-on show.While involved in a number of musical projects in Canada, including Tio Chorinho, Aline Morales, Jesse Cook and Sinal Aberto, Maninho's own samba project in Toronto is Batucada Carioca. What evolved from an informal jam group became the city's premiere Rio-style samba troupe. The foundation of Batucada Carioca's music is a heavy percussive swing, with the melodic accompaniment of cavaquinho, guitar,  and even trombone, as well as various singers singing enredos (traditional styled Carnaval samba anthems).Batucada first played at Uma Nota in 2009, one of the heaviest shows we ever put on at the Gladstone. We recently saw  Batucada play in Montreal to a pumped-up crowd at Parc Jean-Drapeau. A sneak peak of their rehearsal last week impressed the hell out of me. They are cooking up some new stuff and their energy at the moment is pretty hype. Batucada Carioca play the Uma Nota 5-year anniversary at the Great Hall Friday July 27. 

David Arcus: A Composer's Sonic Approach

Musician and composer David Arcus is a true original. Even in Toronto's many diverse musical scenes, he's carved out a special nook for himself. With a background and tastes that include classical music, retro film soundtracks, indie rock and jazz along with Brazilian and West African styles, Arcus manages to bring together subtle touches and intuitive emotional intelligence to his work. As a composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist performer, his ability to create compelling songs and arrangements -- from raw ingredients like a percussion or horn section, a vocalist, or a few killer sounds he's been dying to use -- never fails to please. 
 
The producer and arranger of the Juno-nominated Aline Morales album Flores, Tambores e Amores, David Arcus told us about blending Brazilian music with otherwise unconventional sonic pairings and more. All of this comes ahead of the first show he's putting on under his own name in June at Toronto's Music Gallery.
 
 
When did you know you wanted to work with music full-time?

David Arcus: Believe it or not, my original major in university was biology. Even though I had a love for music, especially composing, I didn’t quite have the confidence to take the plunge and commit myself to music full time. A big shift happened at the end of my second year of biology. I was unhappy and basically realized if I didn’t give music a try I would always regret it. I ended up dropping out of sciences and enrolling in classical composition at U of T.Even though classical music was my main area of study, my musical interests have always been very broad. I listen to everything from rock to jazz to film scores. It was during university that I was first exposed in a serious way to the music of Brazil. That’s also when I met and started working with Aline Morales.

Influences and touchstones

The Aline Morales record in particular includes a lot of "indie rock" (for lack of a better term) influences alongside various ones from Brazilian music and culture. How do you see the mix working? Were there challenges putting these two kinds of sounds together? What was your bottom line when producing and writing the album?

The blend of influences you hear on Flores, Tambores e Amores was the result of a long process of exploration. When Aline and I started working on Flores, we did so without any real gameplan. We’d been writing together for a while but I think we both felt we hadn’t quite found our sound yet. As the writing sessions went on, for whatever reason, the music that we were writing started to change. Whereas before it had been more strictly Brazilian sounding, the new songs were incorporating more diverse influences. I think we were just freeing ourselves up – we both listen to so many different styles of music, it didn’t makes sense to limit ourselves to just one thing.From that point on, things progressed very organically, and at a certain point I remember feeling like we had come across a sound that represented where we were at at that time. That’s when the album really started coming together.

Collaborative process

You do a lot of collaboration, especially with Aline Morales. How does it work? How do other collaborations work? How do you figure out who does what, and how much of the collaborations you do (including but not limited to working w. Aline) are you, and how much the other person? When we we listen to a piece, what is it that we'll hear that will make us say "that's Dave"?

For me every collaboration is different and has its own dynamic. With Aline and I, it tends to be very fluid – we’re both constantly throwing in ideas, to the point where it’s hard to say which elements come from whom. Often, I’ll have a vague idea for a riff or chord progression and I’ll show it to Aline. She’ll come up with a melodic idea and we’ll kind of go from there, bouncing ideas back and forth. I wrote a lot of the melodic arrangements on the album, but even in that department Aline had input at every stage along the way.If there’s one aspect of Flores, Tambores e Amores in particular that carries my stamp, I would say it’s in the sonic approach. As a producer, I’ve got a real love for analog sounds. I love vintage gear and we used a lot of it on the album (tube mics and preamps, tape). I spent a lot of time experimenting with different recording techniques and I worked really closely with the mixer, Chris Crerar, to craft the sound of the album.

The Music Gallery and beyond

What can we look forward to for this show? What makes it special?

When I was first approached by David Dacks to put together a show for the Music Gallery, I have to admit I was intimidated. I’ve seen so many incredible shows at that venue over the years. But I knew the opportunity that was too good to pass up. The Music Gallery is one of those great venues where you can try out all those ideas that wouldn’t be possible anywhere else.Some of the material for this show will be familiar to those who know the Aline Morales album and the music I’ve written for the Uma Nota parties. But I think people will be surprised at how the music has transformed. Along with some new pieces, the existing arrangements have been expanded and re-orchestrated for a new instrumentation.I’ve put together an 11-piece ensemble for this performance, featuring some of my favourite musicians in the city. We’ve got five horns, vibraphone, percussion, drum kit, bass and guitar, as well as some special guests. Musicians included members from the Heavyweights Brass Band, Kobo Town, Friendlyness and the Human Rights, Samba Elégua, Nick Teehan and special guest Aline Morales. This might be the only time you see all these musicians on stage together so don’t miss it!

What's coming up in the next few months?

Aline and I are currently at work on the follow-up to Flores. We’ve got a tour of Quebec coming up in August, finishing up with a show as part of the Summerworks Festival in Toronto. I’m also working on the debut EP for Hello Gumption, an alt-folk group I play with, due out later in the year.
